While there is presently limited sport climbing in the WISAR area there are many areas which are extremely rugged both in rocky shore and upland areas. It is essential for a fully functional SAR team in our area to have rope rescue capabilities.

Over the last two years WISAR has started the process of developing a certified rope rescue team. In 2003 the NIF program provided funding for equipment purchase and initial training for embankment rescue. Since then a group of WISAR volunteers has been training regularly and started the process of receiving certification from PEP certified rope rescue instructors. The certification process takes time; we expect to have our first members certified as Rope Rescue Team Members (RRTM) by the end of 2004 and a more complete team by the end of 2005.
