While there is presently limited sport climbing in the WISAR area there are many areas which are extremely rugged both in rocky shore and upland areas. It is essential for a fully functional SAR team in our area to have rope rescue capabilities.
In 2001 WISAR has started the process of developing a certified rope rescue team. In 2003 the NIF program provided funding for equipment purchase and initial training for embankment rescue. Since then a group of WISAR volunteers has been training regularly and started the process of receiving certification from PEP certified rope rescue instructors. The WISAR Rope Team now has one Rope Instructor and Manager, Team Leader and Team members who train regularly. WISAR hosts a rope course one to two times a year for teams across Vancouver Island to train together at Sutton Pass, ensuring consistency and familiarity through out the region.
